MACRA DEFENDS PROCUREMENT OF ANTI-FAKE NEWS SYSTEM

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General Daud Suleman has defended the authority’s decision to purchase a machine from HASHCOM Ghana Ltd aimed at analyzing misinformation trends on public internet platforms. Suleman stated that the system is essential for combating fake news, promoting responsible use of digital spaces, and protecting Malawians from harmful misinformation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, Suleman clarified that the system is not designed for digital surveillance of private conversations but rather to monitor public online trends.

“The country needs this system to fight fake news and ensure proper use of the digital space,” he emphasized.

Suleman also addressed concerns raised by critics who argue that procuring such a system is ill-timed given Malawi’s current economic challenges. He likened halting the procurement to ceasing payment of employee salaries, arguing that the investment is crucial for MACRA to remain a financially healthy institution.

“If MACRA is to make profits and sustain itself, investments like these are necessary,” Suleman explained. He disclosed that the system is one of several investments MACRA is undertaking, highlighting the organization’s recent financial performance.

Suleman pointed out that MACRA has achieved significant profitability, with this year’s profits expected to reach K13.5 billion. He further projected profits of about K20 billion in the next financial year, emphasizing the value of such strategic investments.

“It is surprising that people are not recognizing these financial successes while focusing on the procurement,” he remarked.
