Yesterday’s meeting between the Civil Servants Trade Union (CSTU) and the Government Negotiating Team (GNT) ended without a resolution.
The Truth Malawi has learned that government officials did not clarify whether they will meet CSTU’s demands or to what extent.
CSTU General Secretary Titha Gomani confirmed the meeting took place on Friday in Lilongwe but refrained from giving details, citing another scheduled meeting before 28 February 2025.
“We have given the government until 28 February 2025, before the national budget presentation, to respond to our demands,” she said.
Gomani added that CSTU will update its members on the outcome of next week’s meeting, expected between Monday and Wednesday.
“If the government fails to address our demands, CSTU, in collaboration with the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM), will proceed with the planned strike,” she warned, though expressing hope for a favorable agreement.
Two weeks ago, CSTU and TUM issued a joint statement announcing a 14-day ultimatum to the Office of the President and Cabinet, citing the government’s lack of response to their demands.
Their demands include revisions to allowances, leave grants, and salary structures for civil servants.
