The recent Malawi Congress Party (MCP) primaries have seen low female representation, with only two women winning shadow MP positions and one securing a councilor seat.
Parliamentary Women Caucus chairperson Racheal Zulu expressed disappointment over the outcome.
“It’s very sad that women are not performing well in the recent MCP primaries. I expected more women to take center stage, but this is a wake-up call for us to step up in the remaining primaries across all parties,” Zulu said.
She urged women to intensify their efforts ahead of the next round of primaries, scheduled for 16 September 2025.
In the 2019 general election, only 43 out of 193 parliamentary seats were held by women. Zulu hopes to see an increase in female representation in the upcoming elections.
