PRESIDENT CHAKWERA URGES CITIZENS TO UPHOLD THE LAW FOR NATIONAL PROGRESS

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the importance of respecting and upholding the country’s laws as a fundamental pillar for national development.

Speaking at the 14th Prison Pass-Out Parade Ceremony at Mapanga Prison Training School in Blantyre, the President stressed that no nation can progress without its citizens adhering to the legal framework that governs society. A total of 995 recruits 410 women and 585 men are graduating from the intensive training program.

President Chakwera urged all Malawians to be custodians of the law, ensuring collective responsibility in maintaining order. Citing the ongoing land dispute in Bula, Nkhata Bay, he pointed out that such conflicts arise when legal protocols are disregarded. While acknowledging calls for his intervention, he clarified that such matters fall under the jurisdiction of the courts, not the presidency.

He further noted that strict observance of the law would help reduce the number of inmates over time. Additionally, he announced that his administration is working on amending prison legal frameworks to align them with contemporary legal standards.

Addressing the new recruits, the President urged them to remain diligent, disciplined, and committed to their duties as they embark on their careers in the Malawi Prisons Service.
