CHAKWERA UNVEILS BOLD PLAN TO TRANSFORM LIKOMA INTO A MODERN HUB

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has unveiled ambitious plans to transform Likoma Island into a thriving economic hub, likening his vision to Dubai’s rapid development.

Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting with chiefs from Likoma and Nkhata Bay at Mzuzu State Lodge, Chakwera emphasized the importance of modernized infrastructure in achieving this dream. He revealed plans to construct state-of-the-art social amenities and announced the upcoming commissioning of the new Likoma Jetty to enhance trade and accessibility.

“My dream is to make Likoma another ‘Dubai.’ We have Dubai today because people came together and pooled their resources. Malawi can also do the same as long as we believe in the same vision,” said Chakwera, referencing Malawi’s 2063 development agenda.

The president also urged traditional leaders to support government initiatives rather than engage in politics, calling them crucial partners in national development.

Addressing Malawi’s ongoing hunger crisis, Chakwera attributed food shortages to climate change rather than a lack of effort from Malawians. He reiterated his commitment to long-term solutions for climate resilience, a stance he has championed on global platforms.

The gathering included Senior Chiefs, Traditional Authorities, sub-Traditional Authorities, and village leaders from Likoma and Nkhata Bay.
