President Lazarus Chakwera has strongly condemned the violence that erupted in Lilongwe yesterday, urging law enforcement authorities to swiftly investigate the matter and bring perpetrators to justice.
In a statement released by Presidential Secretary Anthony Kasunda, President Chakwera expressed his dismay over the attack by panga-wielding thugs on a group of civil servants who had planned a peaceful march to present a petition to Parliament. He emphasized that such acts of violence have no place in a civilized society.
The president reaffirmed that the right to hold demonstrations is a fundamental pillar of democracy and must be respected. He also warned against individuals who exploit political participation or protests as a cover to incite violence, stating that such actions risk tarnishing Malawi’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
Authorities are now under pressure to act swiftly and ensure justice is served in the wake of the violent attacks.
