White Phaphuwa Phikani (100) and his wife, Linny Kazembe Phuphuwa, are appealing to organizations and well-wishers for assistance with housing, food, clothing, and other basic necessities, as they are unable to provide for themselves due to old age.
The couple, from Jorichi 2, Group Village Head Jali in Zomba, often goes days without food and lacks essential resources.
Phikani shared that their situation worsened when unidentified individuals stole his bicycle, which he relied on to travel to the maize mill.
“My wife has poor eyesight, so she can’t go to the maize mill alone. Now that the bicycle is gone, we are struggling to get around,” he said.
Village Head Jorichi confirmed the couple’s hardships and urged organizations and well-wishers to come to their aid.
Although Phikani and his wife receive support through a social protection program, it is not enough to sustain them. Due to their circumstances, they are forced to work in their garden despite their advanced age and poor health.
“They still go to the garden, but it takes a toll on them, causing backaches and preventing them from producing a good harvest,” the chief explained.
The couple hopes for urgent support to improve their living conditions and ease their daily struggles.
