The Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM) has distributed K185,000 each to 177 beneficiaries in Traditional Authority Chigaru, Blantyre, for February and March.
The initiative is part of a multi-purpose cash transfer program targeting 1,203 households affected by the El Niño-induced drought, which has left many struggling with hunger.
Funded by the European Union through ECHO, the program has a total budget of 3,925,234 euros.
Traditional Authority Chigaru acknowledged the widespread hunger in his area and urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly.
Father James Mwamba of Lirangwe Parish encouraged recipients to invest part of the money in small businesses to sustain their livelihoods.
One beneficiary, Marena Masamba, expressed gratitude to CADECOM and pledged to use some of the funds to buy food.
El Niño has severely impacted many households across Malawi, worsening food insecurity.
