CHAKWERA URGES SKILLS DEVELOPMENT TO REDUCE AID DEPENDENCY

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has called for continued promotion of skills development and innovation as a means to economically empower Malawians and reduce the country’s reliance on foreign aid.

Speaking on Podcast Malawi, Dr. Chakwera responded to concerns over the aid freeze announced by the United States in January, emphasizing that Malawi should view the situation as an opportunity for self-reliance.

“Let it be a stepping stone to other avenues that can help us realise that there is so much more we can do,” he stated.

The president highlighted the importance of technological advancements, particularly in equipping the youth with digital skills, which he believes can drive job creation and economic independence. He stressed that investing in skills development will not only empower individuals but also contribute to the nation’s long-term sustainability.

Dr. Chakwera’s remarks come amid discussions on how Malawi can diversify its economic strategies in light of reduced foreign assistance. He urged stakeholders to support initiatives that foster innovation and entrepreneurship to strengthen the country’s economy.
