Traditional leaders in Lilongwe City Centre Constituency have praised their Member of Parliament, Alfred Jiya, for spearheading significant development projects in the area.
Senior Group Village Head Sandram Banda of Area 18 A and B made the remarks during an interface meeting organized by Jiya in Lilongwe.
Banda highlighted that Jiya has overseen a range of development initiatives, including the construction of roads, bridges, school blocks, and improvements in water and sanitation infrastructure.
In his address, Jiya reaffirmed his commitment to ongoing development efforts and emphasized the importance of engaging local leaders and communities.
“As an MP, it’s crucial to stay connected with the people. Development must involve chiefs and community leaders to ensure it truly represents their needs,” said Jiya. “I am also here on behalf of the Malawi Congress Party to inform block leaders that I am standing again in the upcoming elections and to report on how the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has been utilized.”
Chief Banda expressed gratitude for the development progress made in Nankhaka and surrounding areas, calling on traditional leaders to take ownership of the projects.
“Development starts with chiefs. If we don’t take ownership, the community won’t value it, and that’s when vandalism occurs. But if chiefs are involved, everything runs smoothly,” said Banda.
Constituency Chairperson Gift Chisaka also commended Jiya, describing him as a dedicated leader who prioritizes the needs of his constituents.
“Nearly 97% of the community supports us, and we’re aiming for 100% in the coming weeks. In the last election, Jiya won with over 90% of the vote, showing his strong connection with the people,” Chisaka said.
