The Data Protection Authority (DPA) has launched its first-ever Data Protection Awareness Workshop for Government Institutions, marking a major step forward in Malawi’s efforts to strengthen data privacy and cybersecurity.
The workshop comes as the country begins implementing the newly enacted Data Protection Act of 2024, which mandates both public and private institutions to handle personal data responsibly. Under the Act, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has been designated as the Data Protection Authority.
Speaking during the launch, MACRA Board Director Isaac Songea underscored the importance of the new law in safeguarding citizens’ digital rights. “Personal data is one of the most valuable assets in the digital age,” he said.
The workshop seeks to build capacity and raise awareness among government institutions about the need for transparency, fairness, and accountability in managing personal data.
Representing the Reserve Bank of Malawi, Mark Chonde emphasized the importance of responsible data collection, urging institutions to ensure data is securely stored and used appropriately.
The DPA called on all invited institutions to participate fully and work together to protect Malawians’ personal information. The initiative reflects Malawi’s broader commitment to cultivating a digitally secure and rights-based data protection culture.
With the Data Protection Act of 2024 now in force, Malawi joins a growing number of countries with robust legal frameworks aimed at safeguarding personal data in the digital era.
