MALAWI SECURES $350 MILLION WORLD BANK DEAL FOR MPATAMANGA HYDROPOWER PROJECT

The Government of Malawi has signed a $350 million financing agreement with the World Bank for the long-awaited Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project.

Speaking on behalf of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda expressed deep gratitude to the World Bank, describing the project as a historic milestone for Malawi—not just for the energy sector but for the nation as a whole.

Banda highlighted that the Mpatamanga project is expected to more than double Malawi’s current electricity generation capacity. It will provide stable, green energy to households, businesses, and industries, while also enabling Malawi to participate in renewable energy trade within the Southern Africa Power Pool (SAPP), potentially positioning the country as a regional power exporter.

The initiative includes the construction of dams, power stations, and transmission lines, laying the groundwork for long-term, sustainable energy development.

The Finance Minister echoed sentiments from Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola, noting that reforms are underway at ESCOM to enhance operational efficiency and address persistent foreign exchange challenges in the energy sector. Banda assured the public that the government is fully committed to fulfilling all conditions set by the World Bank to ensure timely and effective disbursement of funds.

He also called on Malawians to support this transformative initiative, encouraging communities to take pride in a project that is expected to drive economic growth, generate jobs, and improve the quality of life for millions through reliable electricity access.
