Following persistent challenges caused by the poor state of the road in the Lundu area of Blantyre North Constituency, the government has launched rehabilitation works, set to begin on August 7, 2025, from the court of Senior Chief Lundu. This initiative coincides with the ongoing tarmacking of the Lirangwe–Chingale road.
A road grader, locally known as a “Katapila,” has been deployed by the Blantyre District Council to improve access to Lundu Health Centre.
Francis Phiso, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for the area, announced the development through a community platform, drawing praise from residents who welcomed the government’s move to prioritise the rehabilitation of the busy commercial road.
“This road is always in terrible condition. We’re grateful to see it being worked on,” said one local resident.
DPP Councillor Chipwatali also assured the community of continued efforts to address road challenges in the area. He pledged to advocate for the rehabilitation of other critical roads, including the one leading to Namikoko Health Centre.
“We’ve welcomed this development, and unity is essential as the work progresses. It’s been tough—buying diesel for the grader has been a challenge because we are poor,” said a resident. “We hope other damaged roads in Blantyre North will also be fixed. When the grader driver comes, he should stop at Mr. Kachipeso’s house so we can buy him a cold drink.”
The roadworks mark a significant step toward improving mobility and access to essential services in the constituency.
