CHAKWERA COMMISSIONS K10 BILLION NYIKA-VWAZA WATER PROJECT BENEFITING 18,000 PEOPLE

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has officially commissioned the Nyika-Vwaza Water Project, which is expected to supply clean water to at least 18,000 people in Rumphi and parts of Mzimba.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony held at Thazima, President Chakwera emphasized the project’s importance to sustaining life in the region.

“I am very grateful to all partners, especially the Government of Germany, for supporting this project. Water is life, and this initiative will sustain lives in the areas of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, Katumbi, and Mpherembe,” said Chakwera.

He also urged local communities to take good care of the water infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits.

German Ambassador to Malawi, Ute König, noted that the project will significantly ease the burden of accessing clean water for communities around Nyika and Vwaza Game Reserves.

“Communities have been struggling to access clean and potable water, often walking long distances and facing dangerous wildlife along the way,” said König.

Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, described the project as a heartwarming example of how nature conservation can benefit local communities.

“The government will continue to promote conservation initiatives that consider the welfare of the people,” she added.

Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe hailed the project as a “beautiful gift” to the people of Rumphi and Mzimba.

“This feels like a dream. I am very grateful that the project has finally been completed. Our people will now have access to clean water,” he said.

The project was funded by the Republic of Germany through KfW Development Bank at a cost of approximately K10 billion.
