Government has officially appointed Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI).
Ngwira assumed office immediately following his appointment.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Kachamba succeeds Chezani Otaniel, who had been serving as Acting CEO.
The Ministry highlighted Kachamba’s experience in entrepreneurship and his dedication to empowering young innovators as key reasons for his selection.
Kachamba, who started his career as a young farmer, has earned a reputation for promoting innovation and entrepreneurship among Malawi’s youth.
He is known for developing programs that encourage young people to explore new business ideas and cultivate skills that can help them succeed in the market.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kachamba launched a program offering free training in local manufacturing and production skills, helping participants create and market products amid challenging economic conditions. He also initiated an online marketplace called “All In One”, designed to provide local businesses with a digital platform to sell their products and reach wider markets.
Currently, Kachamba is also the Co-founder and CEO of Project Innovation Center (PIC), a company that works on multiple initiatives to strengthen innovation, entrepreneurial skills and the development of new products in Malawi. His leadership at PIC has been instrumental in mentoring young entrepreneurs and promoting sustainable business practices.
With his appointment at SMEDI, stakeholders are optimistic that Kachamba will continue to support small and medium enterprises, drive innovation, and expand opportunities for young entrepreneurs across the country.
