Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has urged inmates at Zomba Maximum Prison to reflect deeply on their lives and to build a relationship with God so that they may undergo true transformation of heart.
Bishop Chaima said this at Zomba Maximum Prison during a Jubilee Mass for the Pilgrims of Hope to the inmates.
He asked Catholic Christians to pray for all inmates in the country’s prisons so that they may experience positive change in their lives and receive hope from God.
Bishop Chaima also thanked the authorities at Zomba Prison for warmly welcoming them and for allowing them to conduct the Jubilee mass of hope for the inmates.
“I am asking you, my friends here at Zomba Prison, to pray and to bring your worries before God.” He said.
During the event, the Diocese of Zomba, led by Bishop Chaima, donated ten bags of maize, sugar, salt and other items to the inmates at Zomba Prison.
He further appealed to Catholic Christians to support the country’s prisons because they lack many essential supplies.
The Officer-in-Charge of Zomba Maximum Prison, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Dr. Austin Nyoni, expressed his appreciation for the good relationship that exists between the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Zomba and Zomba Maximum Prison.
He also thanked Bishop Chaima for remembering to hold the Jubilee of Hope for the inmates at the prison.
One of the inmates at Zomba Prison, who preferred not to be named, thanked Bishop Chaima for coming to pray with them and for the food donations.
He also requested that, if possible, the Church assist them with other items such as learning materials, hymn books, Bibles and other necessities.
The Catholic Church worldwide celebrates a Jubilee every 25 years.
