The Mzuzu City Council has demolished a rest house that was under construction near Chiwanya after declaring the structure unsafe, residents said on Thursday.
According to people living around the site and eyewitnesses who spoke to this publication a team from the council arrived at the location during the night accompanied by security officers and equipment before beginning the demolition.
Residents said the owner of the building had repeatedly been warned to stop construction, with council officials arguing that the structure posed a danger to nearby households. They feared the unfinished building could collapse and injure people living in the surrounding area.
Despite several directives, the owner allegedly ignored the orders and continued building, prompting the council to take action.
Efforts to obtain an official comment from the council proved unsuccessful, as the spokesperson’s phone could not be reached.
