NAMIWA URGES SADC, COMMONWEALTH TO STOP RECOGNIZING CHAKWERA ON PEACE BUILDING

The head of the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has urged the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Commonwealth to stop granting former president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera any special recognition or peace-building assignments.

Sylvester Namiwa said the two regional bodies should withhold such roles until all actions taken during Chakwera’s administration are thoroughly investigated and addressed.

He added that CDEDI stands in solidarity with civil society organizations in Tanzania, which have also objected to Chakwera’s proposed involvement in regional peace negotiations.

According to Namiwa, the former Malawian leader is not suitable to lead any conflict-resolution efforts, arguing that he lacks the necessary moral authority.

He claimed that during Chakwera’s presidency, corruption was tolerated, public resources were plundered, and criminal gangs allegedly operated with impunity and harmed citizens.

Namiwa said these issues undermine any attempt to position Chakwera as a credible figure in peace-building initiatives.

He made the remarks during a press briefing held in Blantyre.
