NAMALOMBA SAYS MAALAWIANS ARE SUFFERING DUE TO MCP ECONOMIC MISMANAGEMENT

Minister of Information Shadreck Namalomba has accused the Malawi Congress Party (MCP)–led government of plunging Malawians into hardship through what he describes as severe economic mismanagement.

Speaking in Parliament, Namalomba said citizens from all walks of life are condemning the administration for imposing what he called excessive tax hikes that have pushed many Malawians “to the brink.”

In an interview with reporters, he argued that the government has introduced taxes on incomes above 170 kwacha, while the MCP itself, he claimed, takes “as much as K4, 000 from the same 170.”

He further said Malawi’s economy is burdened by heavy debt repayments at a time when citizens expect affordable farm inputs, accessible food supplies, free education, and stable fuel prices—needs the government “has no money to meet.”

“We have done this because the government has no money,” Namalomba said, explaining the recent measures. “But these needs must still be met. When we seek loans from banks, they demand high interest; we can no longer rely on foreign borrowing. That is why we say Malawians must begin to empower themselves as citizens.”

Despite the criticism, Namalomba added that he believes the situation will soon improve and that Malawians will eventually begin to experience relief.
