Minister of Transport and Public Works, Feston Kaupa, says the government is developing plans to purchase a new vessel that will operate on Lake Malawi alongside the MV Ilala.
Kaupa explained that the initiative aims to improve water transport services, noting that reliable lake transport remains essential for communities that depend on it for mobility and trade.
The minister also revealed that construction of the Likoma Island jetty is nearing completion, with the remaining funds already allocated in the 2025/2026 national budget framework.
According to Kaupa, finalizing the project will significantly enhance transport efficiency, boost local commerce, and support broader development efforts on the island.
He made the remarks in Parliament today while responding to a question from Member of Parliament for Likoma, Charles Chilambula.
Chilambula sought clarification on what the government is doing to address longstanding transport challenges faced by residents of Likoma and Chizumulu islands.
In response, Kaupa assured Parliament that the government is committed to improving lake transport and ensuring that communities on the two islands have safe, reliable, and consistent travel options.
