UN ENVOY URGES MALAWI CABINET TO PURSUE BOLD, LONG-TERM REFORMS

Acting United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi Letty Chiwara has called on the newly appointed Cabinet to prioritize decisive and sustained reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and opening pathways for long-term development.

Speaking during a government retreat in Mangochi, Chiwara outlined the country’s pressing fiscal hurdles, including debt pressures and widening public expectations, urging ministers to confront the challenges with clarity and resolve.

She underscored that Malawi’s economic difficulties are not insurmountable, stressing that the nation’s current situation is “man-made and solvable with sound policies,” a remark that appeared to set the tone for the reform discussions.

Chiwara commended the Cabinet for aligning its agenda with the pillars of Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development blueprint, noting that translating these priorities into concrete actions would be essential for progress.

She highlighted agriculture transformation, industrialisation, governance reforms and digitalization as critical areas requiring urgent and coordinated attention.

Turning to gender equality, Chiwara applauded the contributions of women ministers, saying their leadership was vital for shaping stable and inclusive economic growth.

She stressed that empowering women within government and across society forms an integral part of building resilience and fostering broad-based development.

Reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment, Chiwara pledged continued support to help Malawi pursue an inclusive, people-centred development path that leaves no community behind.
