Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah has called on Cabinet ministers to honour Malawi’s renewed social contract with its citizens by embracing patience, discipline, and hard work as the country navigates a challenging economic period.
Speaking at the opening of a strategic Cabinet retreat, Dr. Ansah warned that Malawi is grappling with severe macroeconomic pressures that continue to strain households and public services.
She cited persistent shortages of fuel, fertiliser, food and essential medicines, along with the rising cost of basic commodities, as key issues requiring urgent and coordinated government action.
Dr. Ansah emphasised that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is relying on the Cabinet to implement policies that can stabilise the economy, rebuild confidence, and set Malawi back on a path toward sustainable development.
She noted progress in several areas, including ongoing payroll audits aimed at improving public service efficiency and the strengthening of digital systems across government institutions.
The Vice President also pointed to increased efforts to combat forced labour, saying such reforms are crucial to protecting vulnerable groups and upholding Malawi’s international commitments.
She urged ministers to embrace innovation and accountability while mobilising private capital, diaspora contributions and modern technologies to help finance the nation’s development agenda.
Dr. Ansah concluded by expressing gratitude to UNDP for its continued support, saying strong partnerships remain vital as Malawi works to overcome current economic hardships and pursue long-term transformation.
