Football Association of Malawi (FAM) officials, led by their President Fleetwood Haiya, on Friday paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Patricia Wiskes, at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
In her remarks, the Minister commended FAM for its efforts in developing football and emphasized the need for strong collaboration among key stakeholders.
“There is need for FAM, Malawi National Council of Sports and the Ministry to pull in the same direction to achieve more in football,” she said.
Wiskes further urged the association to ensure that football remains a clean sport by promoting integrity, sportsmanship and safeguarding.
“As a Ministry we would want to see fusion of sports and culture as well in our venues, especially during half time, as the two complement each other,” Wiskes added.
During the meeting, the FAM President presented an overview of the association’s composition, activities, funding streams and future plans.
“The association has outstanding debts of about K600 million that need to be serviced for our smooth operations,” Haiya said, adding, “We have received K1.4 billion from government in this financial year that goes towards the senior national teams, but the debts remain outstanding.”
Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) Acting Chief Executive Officer Ivy Chinangwa praised FAM, stating:
“FAM is a model in integrity, accountability and transparency among the many associations that are affiliated to MNCS,” Chinangwa said.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Ministry, MNCS and FAM.
