The Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Bright Msaka, SC, today held discussions with Robert Martin, the Executive Chairman and Director of Lindian Resources Limited, the company operating the Kangankunde rare earth mine in Balaka District.
During the meeting, the two officials focused on the company’s planned corporate social responsibility projects, starting with the construction of a new primary school close to the mining site.
Msaka applauded Lindian Resources for taking an active role in supporting education, noting that the initiative aligns with government efforts to ensure every child has access to quality learning facilities.
He highlighted that the school will play a vital role in improving education outcomes in the surrounding communities, where infrastructure challenges often limit children’s learning opportunities.
Robert Martin assured the minister that the company remains committed to contributing to social development, adding that the school project is only the beginning of broader community support initiatives.
The minister and the Lindian Resources leadership expressed optimism that the investment will foster stronger collaboration between the mining sector and local communities.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the school is expected to be conducted soon, paving the way for construction to begin within the next six months.
Authorities hope the facility will be ready in time for the upcoming school year, bringing long-awaited educational opportunities to families living near the Kangankunde mine.
