LEAN SEASON FOOD INSECURITY RESPONSE FACES K94.8BN BUDGET GAP

The Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme, which aims to support over four million people at risk of hunger, is facing a K94.8 billion shortfall from its total budget of K209.4 billion.

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) Commissioner Wilson Mollen has disclosed the funding gap, though he remains optimistic that the programme could still run until March 2026 due to pledges from various organisations.

Mollen explained that the government and its partners have so far mobilised K114.6 billion, leaving a significant deficit that must be filled to meet the programme’s objectives.

He expressed confidence that with ongoing support from development partners, the initiative will not be disrupted before its completion date.

Meanwhile, agriculture economist Horace Phiri believes the programme will not face challenges arising from insufficient maize stocks.

Phiri says the government’s plan to import maize from Zambia will help stabilise supplies and ensure smooth implementation.

The Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme was launched last month and targets vulnerable populations across the country.

If fully funded, the programme is expected to run until March 2026, providing essential support to households most at risk of hunger.
