Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha says the proposed Blantyre District Hospital will significantly strengthen both primary and secondary health care delivery in the city.
He said the new facility will also help decongest overstretched referral hospitals that are currently struggling with high patient volumes in Blantyre.
Mwanamvekha explained that the hospital project is expected to improve access to quality health services for residents, particularly those who face long waiting times at existing facilities.
The Minister disclosed that the project will be co-financed by the Saudi Fund for Development and the Kuwait Fund, reflecting strong international support for Malawi’s health sector.
He revealed that the Saudi Fund for Development has already indicated a contribution of about US$15 million towards the project, aimed at enhancing health service delivery.
Mwanamvekha said the investment demonstrates confidence in Malawi’s development agenda and commitment to improving public health infrastructure.
The Minister made the remarks after holding talks with officials from the Saudi Fund in Saudi Arabia as part of engagements to mobilize development financing.
During the meeting, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund, Faisal Al-Kahtani, reaffirmed the fund’s commitment to expanding access to quality health infrastructure in Malawi, citing its previous support to Phalombe District Hospital.
