The Malawi Government has reaffirmed its strong and enduring partnership with the Kingdom of Norway, describing the cooperation as principled, inclusive and people-centred, with tangible benefits for women, girls and vulnerable groups across the country.
Speaking during a reception held in honour of a Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) delegation to Malawi, Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Honourable Mary Thom Navicha, said Malawi highly values partnerships that prioritise equality, protection and inclusion.
The Minister noted that climate change resilience and sexual and reproductive health and rights remain at the core of the shared development agenda between Malawi and Norway. She described Norway as “a partner that knows no weather,” highlighting its consistent support even during challenging times.
Navicha further emphasized that such partnerships are critical in advancing national priorities aimed at empowering women and girls, protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening social welfare systems across Malawi.
In her remarks, NORAD Director General Gunn Jorid Roset said Norway’s collaboration with Malawi has consistently placed women and girls at the centre of development interventions. She said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to dignity, equity and justice.
Roset added that Malawi and Norway have jointly supported programmes targeting the prevention of gender-based violence while promoting safety, justice and equal opportunities for all, particularly women and children.
Meanwhile, the Royal Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Her Excellency Anne Sofie Bjelland, reaffirmed Norway’s unwavering commitment to Malawi. She highlighted continued Norwegian support in strengthening human rights, democratic values and climate change resilience amid increasing global and local challenges.
The Malawi Government welcomed Norway’s continued support and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with development partners to advance gender equality, protect human rights and build resilient communities that leave no one behind, in line with the vision of State President His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
