The race to fill the vacant Rumphi Central Constituency parliamentary seat is intensifying, with political parties repositioning themselves ahead of the forthcoming by-election.
The seat became vacant following the appointment of Enock Chihana as Malawi’s Second Vice President, prompting renewed political activity in the constituency.
During the September 16 general elections, Chihana won the Rumphi Central seat on the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) ticket.
As the party seeks to retain the seat, AFORD has selected its Deputy Secretary General, Paul Nyirenda, to contest in the upcoming by-election.
The United Transformation Movement (UTM) will field Mathews Mtumbuka, who previously served as running mate to Dalitso Kabambe in the last presidential election.
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has also entered the race and will be represented by Yelemiya Chihana.
Meanwhile, Enock Chihana, who is also the AFORD President, is scheduled to hold a public rally today at Rumphi Boma.
A press statement from the Office of the Second Vice President made available to MIJ Online says Chihana will brief the people on the progress of the AFORD/DPP Alliance agenda and its development plans, as the Malawi Electoral Commission is yet to announce the official date for the by-election.
