MUSEVEN LEADS IN UGANDAN ELECTIONS

Uganda’s Electoral Commission says President Yoweri Museveni, 81, is leading the presidential race with over 70 percent of the vote, based on results from nearly 70 percent of polling stations.

His main challenger, Bobi Wine, has so far garnered 21 percent, while the remaining votes are shared among six other candidates.

According to Al Jazeera, Bobi Wine (real name Robert Kyagulanyi) has been placed under house arrest following Thursday’s polls, with security forces blocking his supporters from accessing his residence.

“After casting my ballot, the military deployed all around my home in order to place me under house arrest. They do this because they are afraid of the people’s reaction after stealing their vote,” Bobi Wine wrote on X, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Meanwhile, local authorities report that at least seven people were killed overnight on Thursday as vote counting continued amid tight security, an opposition crackdown and an internet shutdown imposed during the election period.
