MCP NORTHERN REGION OFFICIALS CALL FOR EARLY PARTY CONVENTION

Some senior officials of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in the Northern Region have called for the party to hold an early convention, arguing that this would give newly elected leaders ample time to prepare for the 2030 general elections.

The officials say an early convention would help strengthen the party’s structures and allow leaders to strategically position themselves well ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Speaking in Mzuzu on Saturday, MCP First Deputy Regional Chairperson for the North, Goodwin Mvula, said the move is particularly important now that the party is in opposition.

Mvula explained that holding a convention would enable the party to identify members of the National Executive Committee, who play a key role in selecting the party’s presidential candidate for future elections.

He added that early identification of leadership would promote unity, clarity of direction, and effective planning within the party as it rebuilds after the recent electoral loss.

Meanwhile, MCP National Executive Committee Deputy Director of Strategic Planning, Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, said the party constitution allows a district chairperson to call for a convention.

However, Jere emphasized that there are established protocols and procedures that must be followed to ensure that any convention is held lawfully and in line with party regulations.

The meeting in Mzuzu marked the first major gathering of MCP members in the city since the party lost the September 16 elections last year, signaling renewed political activity and internal reflection within the party.
