MEC PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR FLOOD-DISPLACED VOTERS AHEAD OF NKHOTAKOTA-LIWALADZI BY-ELECTION

Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Justice Annabell Mtalimanja, says the Commission will work with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) to find solutions for people displaced by floods in Nkhotakota ahead of the Nkhotakota-Liwaladzi parliamentary by-election.

Justice Mtalimanja made the remarks in Nkhotakota on Monday during an interface meeting with traditional and religious leaders from the Nkhotakota-Liwaladzi Constituency.

The meeting aimed at discussing how electoral activities will be conducted in the constituency in the lead-up to the by-election.

She said the Commission is aware that some people were forced to leave their homes following floods that affected Nkhotakota District and noted that special consideration is needed to ensure they are able to vote.

Justice Mtalimanja emphasized that MEC is committed to upholding the right to vote for every eligible citizen, including those affected by natural disasters.

Meanwhile, she appealed to traditional leaders in the area to provide equal opportunity to all candidates contesting in the constituency.

She said fairness from local leadership will help ensure that voters are free to choose candidates of their choice without intimidation or favoritism.

MEC is currently holding consultations with traditional leaders and other stakeholders in areas where the Commission is scheduled to conduct the by-election on 17 March this year.
