Approximately 731 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers deploying to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on a peacekeeping mission have been advised to strictly adhere to the United Nations Code of Conduct and maintain high levels of discipline while executing their duties.
The advice was delivered by the Chief of Military Operations for the Malawi Defence Force, Major General George W. Phiri, during the closing ceremony of the Peace Support Operations Training held at Chikala Hills in Machinga District.
Major General Phiri emphasized that all soldiers deployed on international peacekeeping missions are expected to uphold the UN Code of Conduct, which prohibits alcohol consumption, smoking, sexual misconduct, and any form of inappropriate behavior.
He noted that peacekeepers operate in countries with diverse cultures and social norms, making discipline and professionalism essential to maintaining Malawi’s positive image abroad.
Despite facing challenges such as shortages of training equipment, Major General Phiri said the training program was successful and expressed confidence that Malawian soldiers are well prepared for the mission.
He disclosed that the contingent deploying to the DRC comprises 731 soldiers, including 77 female soldiers, who are expected to serve in the mission area for a period of one year.
“Malawians should have confidence that the soldiers we are sending to the DRC will perform commendably because they have received high-quality training and will be carrying the Malawian flag,” said Major General Phiri.
Earlier, the Commanding Officer and lead trainer, Lieutenant Colonel Herbert Lemani, said the training, which started in September last year, was highly successful and urged the soldiers to uphold discipline, describing it as one of the core values of the Malawi Defence Force.
One of the soldiers deploying to the DRC, Private Wanangwa Soko, said commitment and determination helped him complete the training, adding that he is confident he and his colleagues will perform well and represent Malawi with honor.
