The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has formally called on Malawi’s Attorney General to step aside pending the outcome of an alleged corruption investigation.
In a letter dated 17 February 2026, CDEDI urged the Attorney General to temporarily vacate his position to allow investigative processes to proceed without any perceived interference.
According to the correspondence, the request is aimed at ensuring that investigative bodies are able to conduct their work independently and effectively. CDEDI maintains that such a step would reinforce principles of transparency and accountability in public office.
The organization specifically referenced the role of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), emphasizing the need for the bureau and other relevant institutions to operate free from external pressure or influence.
CDEDI argues that stepping aside would not imply an admission of guilt, but rather demonstrate a commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting the credibility of public institutions.
The letter further highlights growing public concern over allegations of corruption in public office, noting that such concerns have the potential to erode trust in the justice system if not handled decisively.
According to CDEDI, maintaining public confidence in legal and governance systems is critical, particularly when senior officials are the subject of investigations.
The organization has therefore urged prompt and decisive action, stating that temporarily stepping aside would help preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations and reassure citizens that allegations of wrongdoing are being addressed thoroughly and impartially.
