The highly anticipated National Shutdown Demonstrations, initially scheduled for next week and organized by the group ‘Concerned Citizens’, have been postponed. The decision was announced by organizers Edwards Kambanje and Oliver Nakoma during a media briefing on Friday.
Kambanje cited the ongoing Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations, which began earlier this week, as the primary reason for the postponement. “Our decision is aimed at preventing any potential disruption or harm to students and the education sector in the country,” he explained.
The organizers highlighted the collaborative effort behind this decision, noting significant input from the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), the Independent Schools Association of Malawi (ISAMA), parents, and various stakeholders. These groups urged the postponement to ensure the examinations proceed without interruption.
“In the spirit of unity, the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), ISAMA, parents, and numerous stakeholders nationwide have engaged with us to request the postponement of our planned demonstrations during this critical period of MSCE examinations,” said Kambanje.
He further emphasized the group’s dedication to peaceful coexistence, adherence to the rule of law, and fostering dialogue. “We recognize that collective action and constructive engagement are crucial for building a harmonious and prosperous society.”
The Concerned Citizens group has informed their co-organizers about the potential rescheduling of the demonstrations, considering the challenges of finding an appropriate time that does not interfere with educational activities. The group reiterated their respect for the right to education and assured they are exploring alternative dates for the protests.
The organizers also distanced themselves from any entities using their name or disseminating information during this period.
The planned demonstrations were set to address grievances such as the high cost of living and economic challenges, which the group argues have led to a stagnating nation. While the demonstrations are postponed, the organizers remain committed to bringing attention to these critical issues through peaceful and constructive means.
The Concerned Citizens group will continue to engage with relevant stakeholders to determine the best way forward, ensuring that their actions do not negatively impact students and the broader education sector.
