BON KALINDO CONGRATULATES MCP FOR WINNING MANGOCHI BY-ELECTION

Human Rights Activist Bon Kalindo has criticized opposition parties in Malawi for their failure to secure a local government seat during the Mwasa Ward by-election in Mangochi district. Unofficial results indicate that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate has won the election.

In his daily voice note released today, Kalindo congratulated MCP for winning the seat and called the results a wake-up call for opposition parties, including the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), which participated in the election.

“What has happened during the Mwasa Ward in Mangochi and Chilaweni in Blantyre by-elections should be a wake-up call to the opposition, especially the DPP. You can’t come empty-handed in two wards that are considered your strongholds,” Kalindo said.

He criticized the DPP for complacency, while the MCP continues to make inroads into traditional opposition territories. Kalindo warned that these are danger signs for the 2025 elections for the opposition.

“Your counterparts are gaining ground, and know that they will likely defeat you again in 2025 if you continue to be complacent,” he added.

Political Commentator George Chaima echoed Kalindo’s sentiments, stating that the by-election results reflect the will of the people. He emphasized that the elections were conducted fairly and the results are credible, with no manipulation from either side.

“The results have sent a strong message to the opposition, knowing it is within their stronghold. It also reflects that even the DPP is not performing well,” said Chaima.

He added that the independent candidate who won in Blantyre could easily align with the MCP, further increasing the party’s popularity.
