As the 2025 general elections draw near, significant political shifts have been observed in Malawi. Notably, there has been a marked movement of individuals from various parties, particularly with many people joining the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) while others are leaving the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for alternative political affiliations.
Recent developments have seen a notable exodus of senior DPP officials resigning from their positions just ahead of the party’s convention scheduled for August 17-18, 2024. Among the high-profile resignations are Steven Maseya, the Deputy Administrative Secretary; Hon. Dalitso Kabambe, a former presidential hopeful; Zelia Chakale, the former Vice President of the Central Region; and Osca Taulo, the Deputy Director of Legal Affairs. Their departures raise questions about the underlying reasons behind this trend.
The surge in resignations from DPP has prompted speculation and concern. The Chichewa proverb, “ukaona mbuzi sikuthawa pa nsipu obiliwira dziwa kuti pali lithumbu,” which translates to “when you see goats running away from green grass, know that there are red ants,” seems particularly relevant. It suggests that beneath the seemingly well-decorated exterior of the DPP, there may be internal issues prompting these high-profile exits.
The focus now shifts to the upcoming DPP convention, where attention will be centered on the new leadership and potential candidates for key positions. The party’s ability to address these internal challenges and present a united front will be critical as it prepares for the 2025 elections.
Political analysts and observers are keenly watching to understand the full implications of these resignations and to see how the DPP will navigate the shifting political landscape.
