In a momentous visit to Rome, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, held a significant meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City.
The meeting, marked by warmth and grace, underscored the deepening of bilateral relations between Malawi and the Holy See, reflecting both historical ties and the unique positions of the two leaders as heads of state with backgrounds in Theology and Philosophy.
During the audience, President Chakwera expressed his profound honor in meeting Pope Francis, emphasizing that he represented not only the people of Malawi, a substantial portion of whom are Catholics, but also approached the encounter as a student and disciple.
The President highlighted his commitment to servant leadership, drawing inspiration from the Pope’s teachings and actions that prioritize the needs of the people.
President Chakwera also commended Pope Francis for his leadership on critical global issues such as climate change and economic inequality. He advocated for strengthened partnerships between Malawi and the Vatican to address these challenges collaboratively.
On a personal note, the President conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Pope Francis on the recent tragic passing of Malawi’s Former Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, who had met the Pope during a previous visit in 2016.
President Chakwera described Dr. Chilima as “a devout Catholic and a source of inspiration for millions of Malawians” and expressed gratitude for the exceptional leadership of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi in guiding the nation through the grief and confusion following the tragic plane crash that claimed Dr. Chilima’s life along with eight others on June 10th.
In response, Pope Francis expressed his joy at meeting President Chakwera and extended his blessings to the President and the people of Malawi. The Pope pledged the Vatican’s continued support for Malawi’s quest for greater prosperity and peace.
Additionally, His Holiness directed the Vatican’s Secretary of State to meet with President Chakwera before his departure to further discuss ways to strengthen Malawi-Vatican relations. The Pope also arranged for the President to receive a private tour of St. Peter’s Basilica, providing a moment of prayer dedicated to the ongoing relationship between Malawi and the Holy See.
This historic visit marks a significant chapter in the relations between Malawi and the Vatican, underscoring shared values and the mutual commitment to addressing global challenges through faith, dialogue, and cooperation.
