ROADS AUTHORITY TO BEGIN REHABILITATION OF LIWONDE-MATAWALE ROAD IN NOVEMBER 2024

The Roads Authority (RA) has announced plans to commence civil works in November 2024 for the rehabilitation of the Liwonde (Machinga)–Matawale (Zomba) Road. The 47-kilometer stretch will be funded by the World Bank through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

The project aims to address infrastructure gaps that hinder connectivity to major economic and production centers, thereby facilitating the export and agro-processing of agricultural products.

Portia Kajanga, Spokesperson for the RA, stated that the road works will upgrade the current road by widening it and adding safety features in the busy trading centers along the route. “This project will enhance safety and improve traffic flow, which is crucial for the local economy,” Kajanga said.

In addition to the road rehabilitation, the project includes the construction of a weigh station at Mpilisi, near Machinga Teachers Training College, to prevent damage from overloaded trucks. This measure aims to ensure the longevity and durability of the newly upgraded road.

The rehabilitation of the Liwonde-Matawale Road is expected to significantly boost trade and connectivity in the region, contributing to the overall economic growth of Malawi.
