NACALA LOGISTICS MAKES FIRST COAL DELIVERY TO LILONGWE

In a significant development for the coal industry, Nacala Logistics has successfully completed its first coal delivery to Lilongwe, opening new avenues for coal users in the region. The shipment, originating from Moatize in Mozambique, marks a key milestone in the revitalization of rail connectivity in Malawi.

On Wednesday, a train carrying a consignment of coal for Shayona Cement Limited arrived at Kanengo station, heralding a new era of streamlined logistics. This delivery is the result of a recently restored rail connection between Balaka and Lilongwe, enhancing trade routes for importers and exporters in the Central and Northern regions, as well as neighboring Zambia.

With the reestablishment of this rail link, traders no longer need to travel to Liwonde or Limbe to load or receive goods. The improved railway infrastructure is anticipated to significantly reduce transport costs, benefiting various sectors reliant on coal and other goods.

Key international trade destinations connected by the rail include the Port of Nacala and Moatize. Additionally, the Port of Beira will soon be accessible via the Marka Railway line, which is currently under construction, further bolstering Malawi’s trade network.

This development not only facilitates more efficient logistics but also strengthens economic ties within the region, promising substantial benefits for local businesses and the broader economy.
