Children of musician Lucius Banda have requested Malawi President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to repeal the death penalty as a way of honoring their father.
Mapiri Banda, together with his siblings, made the request on Thursday during the funeral ceremony of their father, who died in South Africa after a long illness.
Also making his speech John Banda the first born son said that his father was their best friend, highlighting his humility and generosity as an artist who fought for the rights of the poor. He emphasized that his legacy will continue to grow and that Zembani Band and Zembani Music Company will not die, but rather continue to exist and grow.
He further mentioned that, as someone who contributed to national development through music, his father also advocated for the repeal of the death penalty.
One of the members of Zembani Band, Jean Kachepansonga, assured Malawians that they will continue to carry on what Lucius Banda taught them.

In his speech, representative of the bereaved family, Mr. Layasi Kamoto, said that the family has lost a pillar, as Lucius Banda was known for his kindness, peacemaking efforts, and faith.
He expressed gratitude to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for supporting Banda throughout his illness and for also extending support to his brother Paul Banda.
Lucius Banda passed away on June 30, 2024 in South Africa, where he was receiving medical treatment.
Until his death, he served as an Advisor to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Youth and Art.
