UTM TO ANNOUNCE ITS POLITICAL FUTURE THIS AFTERNOON

The future of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM political alliance is expected to be known this afternoon as the Central Executive Committee of UTM is meeting today to make the decision.

One of the executive members has confided with this publication that the main agenda during the meeting is to see if the party should continue the marriage with the ruling MCP.

This morning, UTM supporters marched from the official residence of the Vice President in Area 12 to its headquarters in Area 10, carrying placards indicating they want to end the alliance with the MCP.

Before the march started, UTM supporters wanted to remain at the official residence of the Vice President until they are addressed on the next political future of the party.

Party Secretary General Patricia Kaliyati requested them to move to the Area 10 party office where they will be addressed after the meeting.

Some UTM officials, such as Secretary General Patricia Kaliyati and Publicity Secretary Felix Njawala, have already arrived at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.

The party’s interim President, Dr. Michael Usi, is expected to attend the meeting.

The party is also expecting to address the nation through a press briefing to be held this afternoon on the decision the party has made.

This comes barely a month after the death of former President, the late Dr. Saulos Chilima, who died in a plane crash in Mzimba district.

Until his death, Dr. Chilima was the President of UTM.

As one way to respect the constitution, President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera appointed Dr. Michael Usi as Malawi’s Vice President, replacing Chilima.
