Political experts in the country have commended the leadership style President Chakwera portrayed to Malawians when the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM were in a political alliance.
George Chaima said this after UTM resolved to quit the Tonse Alliance during the meeting held in Lilongwe.
On Friday, the UTM Central Executive Committee made the resolution to leave the Tonse Alliance in order to focus on the 2025 elections.
Political commentator Chaima said the decision by UTM will have negative impacts on both MCP and UTM, considering the timing of the decision.
“The two parties have a huge task to do to reorganize and be successful because such kind of decisions were supposed to be made earlier than this time,” he said.
Chaima believes that UTM made the decision because of disgruntlement for not being accommodated in the government system.
He then thanked President Chakwera for remaining calm and resilient despite going through hard times following the death of the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima.
“We should appreciate the president for handling the situation with maturity. This is the kind of leadership Malawi wants,” said Chaima.
He also thanked UTM that, despite all the anger its members had for the challenges experienced while in the Tonse Alliance, they maintained peace.
“Political parties should emulate the good example set by UTM in promoting peace even during times of challenges. We should join hands in promoting peace and unity for our beloved Malawi,” added Chaima.
He further advised UTM and MCP to look for strong possible political partners in order to beat the 50+1 electoral rule during the 2025 general elections.
