ZOMBA COUNCIL CHAIR COMMENDS AGE AFRICA FOR PROMOTING GIRLS’ EDUCATION

Chairperson of Zomba District Council, Councilor Basta Chirwa, has praised Advancing Girls’ Education in Africa (Age Africa) for its significant role in promoting girls’ education in the district.

Age Africa provides bursaries to needy secondary school students at St. Mary’s Secondary, Masongola, and Mulunguzi secondary schools in Zomba District.

The 2022/2023 Malawi Schools Certificate of Education (MSCE) Examination results reveal that several girls sponsored by Age Africa were selected to pursue higher education at public universities, including the University of Malawi (UNIMA), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), and Mzuzu University.

Councilor Chirwa expressed satisfaction with Age Africa’s girls’ education program, calling it a crucial step towards girls’ empowerment. He was particularly impressed with Colletah Mpaso, a student at St. Mary’s Secondary School sponsored by Age Africa, who scored 14 points in the MSCE Examination.

Mpaso, who has been selected to pursue tertiary education at KUHES, will continue to receive support from Age Africa until her graduation.

“Let me thank Age Africa for providing bursaries to needy girls from secondary schools to university colleges. This is what the government wants. Organizations like Age Africa should complement government efforts in promoting girls’ education,” Councillor Chirwa added.

Age Africa District Coordinator Jessie Puwapuwa emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting needy girls to advance their education, empowering them to become economically independent and productive citizens.

She disclosed that Age Africa provided bursaries to nine Form 4 students in the 2022/2023 academic year, with eight of them expected to pursue higher education in various universities. Among these, three students will attend KUHES, three Mzuzu University, one UNIMA, one LUANAR, and one MUBAS.

Twenty-year-old Colletah Mpaso, who will study Physiotherapy at KUHES, thanked Age Africa for sponsoring her secondary education. She urged fellow beneficiaries to work hard in college to fulfill their dreams and help realize Age Africa’s mission of advancing girls’ education.
