Malawi and Mozambique signed pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) on Wednesday, aimed at bolstering the energy sector and enhancing trade between the two nations. The signing ceremony, held at the Office of the President of Mozambique in Maputo, was attended by both Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera and Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi.
President Chakwera expressed optimism about the agreements, highlighting their potential to significantly improve economic relations.
“I am optimistic that the opening up of the Nacala Port to transport fuel and petroleum products from Mozambique to Malawi will reduce transportation costs of petroleum products,” Chakwera said. He also noted that the energy agreement would help mitigate power outages.
The MOUs were formalized by the Energy Ministers of Malawi and Mozambique. The agreements outline several key objectives for Malawi, including negotiating for a convenient border post, simplifying trade regimes, ensuring equal treatment for transporters, and enhancing security to prevent unauthorized border crossings.
Chakwera commended the strengthened bilateral ties between Malawi and Mozambique, noting the benefits for both nations.
βIt is pleasing to note that Malawi and Mozambique bilateral ties are now stronger than ever, a development that is beneficial to the people of Mozambique and Malawi,β he said.
In his remarks, President Nyusi emphasized the importance of implementing the agreements to maximize their benefits.
“Key sectors that are crucial to the development of our two countries have been thoroughly scrutinized, such as agriculture, energy, and transport. Much focus has been given to the transport and energy sector,” Nyusi explained.
Nyusi also highlighted ongoing and future projects, including the Malawi-Mozambique Interconnector Project and the Matambo Substation as part of the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnection Project (MOMA). He expressed concern over the low trade volumes between the two countries despite their proximity to major commercial hubs.
βI can confidently say that we have allocated a space at Nacala Port for Malawi to be spearheading transportation of products to minimize traffic and cargo taking too long to reach Malawi,β Nyusi said. He also revealed plans for a one-stop border post at Mwanza in Malawi to further facilitate trade between the two countries.
During his visit to Mozambique, President Chakwera was also given a tour of the Beluluane Industrial Park in Boane district to observe industrial activities.
The agreements are expected to strengthen economic cooperation and improve infrastructure, benefiting both Malawi and Mozambique in the long term.
