MALAWI SECURES €70 MILLION SOLAR ENERGY PROJECT IN MZUZU

Malawi has embarked on a transformative journey in its energy sector with a landmark investment of 70 million Euros from Sun Power Africa Development Limited. The investment will facilitate the construction of a 50-megawatt solar farm in Choma, Mzuzu, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renewable energy landscape.

The solar farm, which will span an 80-hectare piece of land, is expected to provide substantial employment opportunities, with over 100 people set to be employed during the construction phase and 80 individuals employed continuously over the next 25 years. This project is poised to not only enhance Malawi’s energy capacity but also contribute to local economic growth and sustainable development.

This monumental project is the brainchild of Mzuzu University (Mzuni), under the visionary leadership of its Chancellor, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, and the university’s management team. Mzuzu University has long been recognized as a center of excellence in renewable energy studies, and this project represents a significant step in translating academic knowledge into practical, impactful initiatives.

Mzuni Vice Chancellor, Professor Wales Singini, highlighted the university’s commitment to this project, revealing that they have already signed a Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom). The agreement initially covers 20 megawatts, with potential to increase as the project progresses and as Sun Power Africa Development Limited commits further investments.

Zeno Fleck, one of the shareholders at Sun Power Africa Development Limited, expressed his company’s readiness to commence the project. “We have completed all necessary feasibility studies and are fully prepared to move forward following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). I will be coming to Malawi in the next few weeks to ensure the project gets underway,” Fleck said.

The Choma solar farm aligns with President Chakwera’s commitment to addressing Malawi’s persistent electricity challenges. Upon taking office in 2020, President Chakwera vowed to end the frequent blackouts that have plagued the nation. His administration’s focus on rehabilitating infrastructure and constructing new power plants, such as the Choma solar farm, underscores this commitment.

As construction begins, the Choma solar farm is expected to play a crucial role in diversifying Malawi’s energy sources, reducing reliance on hydroelectric power, and promoting sustainable energy practices. The project is not only a testament to the growing investment in Malawi’s energy sector but also a beacon of hope for a future with reliable, renewable energy for all Malawians.
