President Lazarus Chakwera has lauded the Global Fund for its unwavering commitment and dedication to addressing health challenges in Malawi, highlighting the Fund’s support as a crucial pillar in the country’s pursuit of its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The President made these remarks during the official launch of the Global Fund Grant Cycle 7 on HIV, TB, and Malaria at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
In his speech, President Chakwera emphasized the pivotal role the Global Fund has played in the nation’s health sector, acknowledging the significant progress made through previous grants.
“Through these grants, we have expanded access to health services, increased the availability of life-saving medications, and improved health infrastructure,” Chakwera stated.
He also noted the procurement of essential medical equipment, including ambulances, utility vehicles, gas plants, and modern hospital equipment such as CT scanners, alongside the recruitment of thousands of healthcare workers.
Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda echoed the President’s sentiments, emphasizing that the initiative reflects the Global Fund’s trust in Chakwera’s administration. Meanwhile, Head of the Grants Management Unit, Mark Eldon-Edington, reiterated the Global Fund’s commitment to maintaining a robust supply chain and praised the Malawi Government for its leading role in combating these diseases.
In a further show of support, American Charge D’Affairs Amy Diaz reaffirmed the U.S. Government’s dedication to continued collaboration with the Malawian Government through the Global Fund, ensuring the effective allocation of resources towards HIV programs.
The Global Fund has approved a grant of over $525 million for Malawi, aimed at tackling malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and HIV from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2027. Of this amount, $419 million will be directed towards HIV and TB management, with $84 million allocated to combat malaria.
