The Catholic Women Association (CWA) of the Zomba Diocese concluded its four-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) at St Peter’s Major Seminary, Zomba, with ten resolutions. Among the resolutions were the avoidance of thin plastic materials and a call for women to register to vote in the 2025 general elections, emphasizing equal representation of women in elective positions.
The AGM, held under a theme centered on women’s participation and environmental care amid concerns about food shortages, drew attention to critical social and environmental issues.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Vicar General of the Diocese, Father Bernard Chipole, praised the CWA for successfully hosting the event and expressed hope that the resolutions would be realized.
“I encourage you to actively contribute to environmental protection and conservation. Keep advocating for the complete ban on the production and use of thin plastic as we address the ongoing challenges of climate change,” Father Chipole said.
He also emphasized the importance of the AGM in fostering the spiritual growth of families and the Catholic Church. “This is commendable work. Continue implementing various initiatives that benefit the Church and the vulnerable communities,” he added.
CWA Chairperson, Christina Lakiyoni, highlighted that the AGM covered several areas that would be transformed into actionable goals, guided by the organization’s strategic plan. She also urged women to participate in the 2025 general elections and to support female candidates, reinforcing the 50/50 campaign for gender parity in leadership.
One delegate, Agnes Kasito from Nankhunda Parish, expressed her gratitude for the AGM, noting that it provided a valuable platform for women to discuss issues that would enable them to play more prominent roles in the Church.
Key Resolutions from the AGM:
- Promoting environmental consciousness by avoiding the use of thin plastic.
- Teaching children to uphold Christian values.
- Adopting family planning methods consistent with Christian teachings.
- Encouraging women to vote in the 2025 general elections and support the 50/50 gender representation campaign in elective positions.
