The Malawi Parliament passed four financial bills aimed at boosting the country’s development and governance on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
Minister of Finance, Simplex Chithyola Banda, presented the bills, which received support from both sides of the house. The bills include:
1. Bill No. 13 of 2024: International Development Association (Additional Financing for Malawi Governance to Enable Service Delivery Project) – valued at K61 billion.
2. Bill No. 14 of 2024: International Development Association (Digital Malawi Acceleration Project under the Inclusive Digitalization in Eastern and Southern Africa Program).
3. Bill No. 15 of 2024: International Development Association (Malawi Health Emergency Preparedness Response and Resilience Project).
4. Bill No. 16 of 2024: International Development Association (Malawi Fiscal Government Program for Results).
Minister Chithyola Banda emphasized the importance of these bills for the management of Malawi’s economy, particularly in enhancing service delivery in the health sector and improving resilience during disasters. He also highlighted the bills’ role in promoting transparency, accountability, and donor confidence.
Spokespersons from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and United Democratic Front (UDF) expressed support for the bills but urged the government to ensure that funds are used as intended for the benefit of all Malawians.
