CHAKWERA CONCLUDES UNGA VISIT, STRENGTHENS GLOBAL TIES

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has departed Washington D.C. after attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United States of America. He was seen off at Dulles International Airport by Malawi’s Ambassador to the U.S., Justice Esme Chombo, Brigadier General Nyamali, and other officials from both Malawi and the U.S. governments.

During his time in New York, President Chakwera participated in several high-level engagements, including the Summit of the Future and discussions on the Miombo Forest Declaration. In his address to the UNGA, the President underscored the importance of a collective global response to the challenges faced by Malawi and other developing nations, calling for increased international collaboration to address issues such as poverty, food security, and sustainable development.

A key highlight of President Chakwera’s visit was his bilateral meetings with various world leaders, including the Presidents of Latvia and Ireland, as well as UN Secretary-General António Guterres. These discussions aimed to strengthen Malawi’s diplomatic relations and attract further international investment to support the country’s development goals.

Additionally, President Chakwera hosted the second Malawi Partners Conference, which focused on long-term solutions to food security. The conference drew prominent global figures, including Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina. At the event, Adesina announced a K95 billion grant to Malawi, with K1 billion earmarked for food aid to assist those affected by hunger through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs.

In Washington, D.C., President Chakwera also met with leaders of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and USAID, where he expressed appreciation for their continued support to Malawi’s economic and development programs.

The 79th session of UNGA, held under the theme “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” provided a platform for world leaders to discuss pressing global challenges and reinforce commitments to sustainable development.

President Chakwera’s participation in this year’s session underscores Malawi’s commitment to fostering international cooperation and securing partnerships that will advance the country’s development and improve the lives of its citizens.
