President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has hailed Indian President Shrimati Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Malawi as a significant step in enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations. Following bilateral talks on Friday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo shared President Chakwera’s delight in Malawi being one of only three African countries President Murmu has visited.
President Chakwera expressed gratitude for India’s continued support in areas such as education, health, and agriculture, which has strengthened cooperation between the two countries. He also requested a reduction in tariffs on Malawian exports to India, including macadamia nuts and pigeon peas, to boost forex reserves.
During the talks, President Chakwera presented Malawi’s Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy, highlighting potential areas for investment. The two leaders also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on youth and sports, pharmacy, and local governance.
President Murmu further donated cancer equipment for Kamuzu Central Hospital and 1,000 metric tonnes of rice. Her visit is expected to enhance collaboration in trade, health, agriculture, and education.
The Indian President’s three-day visit includes several official engagements, including a stop at the Memorial Tower in Lilongwe.
